Duran Duran-Greatest [1998]

Posted by bryanae1 on July 12, 2008

Greatest was an update of the 1989 ten-year anniversary compilation album, Decade: Greatest Hits. The new release featured songs from their eponymous debut album, right up to 1997.

The album was released by EMI after parting ways with the band after the disastrous Medazzaland album release in 1997, and marked the first of many releases designed to capitalize on the band’s extensive EMI-controlled back catalogue.

To coincide with the release of the Greatest album in the United Kingdom, the song “Electric Barbarella” was released as a single. This track was originally released as a single in North America in 1997 to promote the Medazzaland album (which was never released in the UK).

To date, a full collection of Duran Duran’s singles on one album still hasn’t been released.

Blue Oyster Cult-Agents of Fortune [1976]

Posted by bryanae1 on July 12, 2008

Agents of Fortune is the 1976 release by Blue Öyster Cult, originally released in a gatefold sleeve.

The platinum selling album peaked at #29 on Billboard’s Pop Albums chart, while the single “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper” peaked at #12 on the Pop Singles chart, making it Blue Öyster Cult’s biggest hit. The album was also the band’s greatest critical success, voted one of the ten best rock albums of 1976 in the annual Village Voice Pazz & Jop critics’ poll.

Upon the success of the single, “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper”, Blue Öyster Cult became the center of a controversy surrounding the supposed pro-suicide lyrics of the song, which is actually a love ballad concerning love that lasts beyond death, and a call to seize the day.

Track listing

2. “True Confessions” (Allen Lanier)– 2:57

5. “The Revenge of Vera Gemini” (A. Bouchard, Patti Smith) – 3:53
6. “Sinful Love” (A. Bouchard, H. Robbins) – 3:29
7. “Tattoo Vampire” (A. Bouchard, Robbins) – 2:41
8. “Morning Final” (Joe Bouchard) – 4:30
9. “Tenderloin” (Lanier) – 3:40
10. “Debbie Denise” (A. Bouchard, P. Smith) – 4:23

Van Halen The Best of Both Worlds [2004]

Posted by bryanae1 on July 12, 2008

The Best of Both Worlds is a greatest hits album by American hard rock band Van Halen, released in 2004. The title “The Best of Both Worlds” references both their song of the same name, and the fact that the album has the greatest songs from their two main vocalists David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar. It featured no songs from the band’s last studio album, Van Halen III, which featured Gary Cherone on vocals.

The album features 16 songs from David Lee Roth era (1978-1985), 17 from Sammy Hagar era (1986-1995), plus the three new Hagar songs. David Lee Roth was vocalist for the first six albums, Sammy Hagar for the following four.
